Self Assessment – Request additional time to pay taxes due.

Struggling to Pay Your Tax Bill? A Time to Pay Arrangement Could Help
If you’re finding it difficult to pay your tax bill to HMRC, you’re not alone — and help is available. HMRC offers something called a Time to Pay arrangement, which allows individuals to spread the cost of their Self Assessment tax bill over manageable monthly instalments.
This flexible payment option can make a big difference, especially if you’re experiencing financial pressure or unexpected cash flow issues. In fact, HMRC reports that more than 30,000 people made use of this arrangement last year, particularly during the pandemic when many faced extra financial strain.
The good news is that you may be able to set up a Time to Pay plan online, without needing to call HMRC or speak to an adviser. However, there are a few conditions you’ll need to meet in order to use the online service. You can apply online if:
- Your last tax return has been submitted
- You owe £30,000 or less in tax
- You have no other outstanding tax debts
- You’re not currently on any other HMRC payment plans
- Your tax payment was due less than 60 days ago
If you meet all these criteria, you can apply quickly and securely by visiting the HMRC portal here:
